Kansas State Regulations on Towing

Kansas

  • Trailers over 2,000 lbs must be tagged and registered.

  • Trailers can be up to 53 feet long and 8.5 feet wide; overall towing length limit is 65 feet for double trailers.

  • Safety chains, working brakes (trailers over 3,000 lbs), taillights, turn signals, and reflectors are mandatory.

  • Loads must be secured; overhanging loads require proper marking.

  • Maximum speed for towing a mobile home: 55 mph.

  • Only one trailer may be towed behind passenger vehicles (special permits for oversize trailers).

  • Kansas City and Jackson County require towing companies to be licensed; predatory towing is targeted by local ordinances with strong penalties.
